Laura Khan (Fiji Islands, ’06-’08) will coordinate efforts by and for the BARPCV community related to this year’s issue- clean water - which won the member’s poll. Clean water is of central importance, to which many RPCVs can attest. Access not only limits the spread of disease, but is central to proper nutrition and daily functioning. Many families travel long distances to wait in endless lines for clean, potable water, though access to clean water is often thought to be a basic human right. Peace Corps Volunteers have spear-headed sanitation schemes, borehole projects, and coastline protection activities, among many initiatives in their countries of service. Their diverse community’s analogous needs emphasize the public health and environmental importance of clean water worldwide. Since BARPCV members have chosen this issue, they will be encouraged to participate in, and help coordinate, if they wish, activities such as guest speakers, fundraising events, partnerships with local groups, literature dissemination, and other activities designed to raise awareness and advocacy around this vital issue. Here is a list of resources related to the issue: Almost 10% of the global disease burden could be prevented by improving water supply, sanitation, hygiene and management of water resources. Estimated number of deaths that could be prevented: - 1.4 million child deaths from diarrhea - 500 000 deaths from malaria - 860 000 child deaths from malnutrition - 280 000 deaths from drowning WHO http://www.who.int/research/en/ WHO facts http://www.who.int/topics/water/en/index.html http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/water/en/index.html International Decade for Action Water for Life 2005-2015 http://www.un.org/waterforlifedecade/ Non-governmental / Advocacy International: Global Water http://www.globalwater.org/ IRC International and Water Sanitation Centre http://www.irc.nl/ Water Partners International http://www.water.org/ Lifewater International http://www.lifewater.org/ Global Water Partnership http://www.gwpforum.org/servlet/PSP National: Sierra Club http://www.sierraclub.org/cleanwater/ Clean Water Action http://www.cleanwateraction.org/ National Association of Clean Water Agencies http://www.nacwa.org/ Massachusetts Water Watch Partnership http://www.umass.edu/tei/mwwp/ American Water Works Association http://www.awwa.org/ Research Centers UMass Amherst Water Resources Research Center http://www.umass.edu/tei/wrrc/index.html Center for Water and Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health http://www.jhsph.edu/water_health/ Stroud Water Research Center http://www.stroudcenter.org/index.htm Center for Water Research http://www.cwr.uwa.edu.au/ National Institutes for Water Resources http://snr.unl.edu/niwr/
