Welcome to BARPCV Community of Service

We prefer to think of COS as a Community or Continuation of Service, rather than Close of Service.  Long after you took that one-way flight back to the US of A you still may have the passion to help, connect and make a difference in your community.

BARPCV Community Service Committee organizes service opportunities for members in collaboration with community organizations in the Boston area.  In addition to helping others and improving your community you can meet and connect with other BARPCVs, develop new skills and use your skills you so heavily relied on in Peace Corps in a productive way here in the US.

For information or to get involved, contact the BARPCV Community Services Chair, Laura Campbell, at service@barpcv.org.

Please make sure that service@barpcv.org is on your email “safe” list so that my emails do not get filtered out!

Current Activities:

We had a great trip to Rosie’s Place!  And we are going again!  Back by popular demand we will be doing another trip in February and planning monthly or quarterly trips in the future – depending on interest!

SAVE THE DATE:  April 22, 2005
Shift: Lunch (11am to 1:30pm)

This time we will be going on a weekend so that more people who cannot be there for the weekday sessions can attend.  Volunteers help preparing, serving, and cleaning up after a meal 7 days a week every day of the year. At Rosie's Place, volunteers are not "extra helpers" but instead are vital to the ability to serve the women who rely on Rosie’s Place for both basic survival and assistance in reaching their dreams.

"Rosie’s Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women, offers both emergency and long-term assistance to women who have nowhere else to turn. Established in 1974, Rosie’s Place is committed to welcoming each guest with respect and unconditional love. Rosie’s Place accepts no government funds, and relies instead on committed volunteers and private supporters to accomplish its effective and innovative work." (http://www.rosies.org/Cultures/en-US/default.htm)

I will also be collecting donations to take over to Rosie’s Place.  Please see below (Reason #5 below) for the list of items they are need and contact me so I can come pick them up!

Please email me, Laura Campbell (Nicaragua '02 - '04) at: service@barpcv.org if you are interested in attending!

Opportunities available for BARPCVs through other Boston area organizations:

If you can’t make it to our current activity but you still want to get involved with your community there are other options!  BARPCV maintains relations with like-minded organizations for those who want to continue to volunteer their time and be involved in community service work.

Also, we know that many times we come up for a million reasons for not getting involved – each of the opportunities below is a response to many of those reasons.

Reason #1: I don’t have time and can’t make a long term commitment to one type of service or organization!

People Making a Difference through Community Service (PMD)

PMD is a non-profit, all-volunteer group that organizes one-day, hands-on community service projects that assist other charitable groups in Greater Boston. PMD currently needs volunteers and encourages RPCVs to participate in its upcoming events.  For information on upcoming activities and to volunteer, contact Lori Tsurada at 617-437-8871, or email lori@pmd.org .

(Sign up for upcoming events at www.pmd.org/form.html)

Reason #2: I REALLY want to practice the language I learned in Peace Corps while helping people out!

Boston City Halls Volunteer Interpreter Pool

Boston's diverse communities need your help! Boston now speaks 140 languages. Volunteer for Boston City Hall’s Volunteer Interpreter Pool to help Boston's diverse residents gain better access to essential city services. Contact Armando Silva at the Office of New Bostonians by phone- (617) 635-1961 or fax (617) 635-4540. Give your name, telephone #, address, email, and language(s) you can interpret.

Reason #3: I have a lot of experience and love working with children and I would like to focus more on them!

Boston Partners in Education

Boston Partners in Education is a catalyst for community involvement in education. Through quality program development and the professional training of volunteers from businesses, colleges and neighborhoods, Boston Partners in Education enriches the experiences of Boston's students and helps them develop the academic skills, self-confidence, and motivation to realize and achieve their full potential.

Volunteers are needed to tutor/mentor Boston Public School students in the areas of math and literacy. We place volunteers in all grades, K-12, in all neighborhoods of Boston. One hour a week is all that is needed.

For those individuals seeking one time opportunities, our Career Enrichment program connects volunteer speakers to middle and high school students to broaden students' viewpoints with their life experiences and knowledge of career options.

For more information, and to find an available school convenient for you, call Barbara Harris at 617-451-6145 or get the process started by filling out a volunteer application on our Web site, www.bostonpartners.org

The Apprenticeship Program of Citizen Schools

The Apprenticeship Program of Citizen Schools, Dorchester, matches immigrant youth aged 9-14 with professionals in the community. Share your knowledge with a student once a week for 10 weeks, beginning in the fall of 2001. A link with your country of service and the student’s home country is not necessary. For more information, visit http://www.citizenschools.org, or call Mariam Gates at 617.695.2300, ext. 111.

Reason #4: Who are all those people in orange coats and khakis?! I would like to volunteer with them!

City Year

BARPCV annually has a team which participates in City Year's Serv-A-Thon. For more information contact Heidi Given at hgiven@earthlink.net or visit the City Year Website at www.city-year.org.

Reason #5: I don’t have time, but I have all this STUFF I think people could really use!

Donate Your Used Vehicle to Help & Crisis International

Organizations throughout the world will use them in their work with needy children and orphans. Your donation is tax deductible. PLUS they will pick the vehicle up for free. Call 800.454.1713.

Rosie’s Place In Kind Donations

Through the drop-in advocacy program Rosie’s Place is able to distribute clothing, toiletries and other items to thousands of poor and homeless women each year. Rosie’s Place relies on the generosity of individuals, companies and organizations to provide these essential items.  Rosie's Place is always in need of the following items:

• Clean, in-season women’s clothing, particularly nightgowns, slippers, new underwear, bras and socks

• Toiletries – shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes; regular and travel sizes are appreciated

• Non-perishable food items, particularly canned vegetables and fruits, cereal, peanut butter, pasta, non-refrigerated juices and rice

• Children’s books

• Buttons and jewelry

• Playing cards

You can drop off in-kind donations to Rosie's Place Monday through Friday 8 am - 4:30 pm or on weekends and holidays from 10 am – 3 pm OR contact Laura Campbell at service@barpcv.org – I will be organizing a pick-up day before our trip in January!

Reason #6: Isn’t BARPCV a Democracy?!  I have more ideas about community service that are not on this page!

Yes, it is a democracy!

Reason #8: I had a great time in Peace Corps but now I want to do things on my own!

You can!
