Book Club - Under the Udala Trees

Jan 19 2017 - 7:00pm

The book for January is Under the Udala Trees, (2015) by Chinelo Okparanta. Set in the Nigerian state of Biafra during the civil war, a young girl, Ijeoma, is sent to be a servant and meets another girl even more adrift than herself. The story of their lesbian love develops and Ijeoma tries to figure out how to both be herself and live in a deeply conservative culture. The author layers her story with historical events and Nigerian folktales.
