A novel for which Adichie won the National Book Critics Fiction Award. It tells the story of a young Nigerian woman who immigrates to the United States to attend university. The novel traces her life in both countries, threaded by her love story with a high school classmate. Upon coming to America she discovered for the first time what it means to be a "Black Person". The Chicago Tribune reviewed it as "sprawling, ambitious and gorgeously written, covering race, identity, relationships, community, politics, privilege, language, hair, migration, intimacy, estrangement, blogging, books, and Barack Obama".
